Self-learning robots, robotic sailing boats or sophisticated robotic mechanics were just some of the exciting topics that 26 students from all over Europe got to grips with between 1st and 15th August. Scientists from Austria, Slovakia and Great Britain gave these next-generation researchers a fascinating insight into their research areas.
As well as lectures, the programme also included excursions and workshops, giving students hands-on experience and enabling them to bring their own robots to life.

"Teaching here has been great fun. We will try to run the Robotic Summer School again next year," said Roland Stelzer, lecturer and organiser of the event.
Alongside the academic aspects, the programme also included sightseeing in Vienna and Bratislava and a camping weekend with wine-tasting at Lake Neusiedl. "I really enjoyed the course and learned a lot of new things," said one of the workshop participants.
The Robotic Summer School is part of Centrobot, a cross-border robotics initiative, and was run by the Centrobot Consortium in collaboration with BEST Vienna. The Centrobot project is supported by the Ministry for Science, the Ministry for Economy, as well as the European Fund for Regional Development. The next Centrobot event is the European Robot Sumo Championship in early 2009 (www.robotsumo.org).
